If Covid-19 and the newly introduced anti-dumping tariffs on Chinese-built mobile access equipment have taught us anything, it’s this: relying too heavily on a single supply source comes with serious risks.
Many product categories in our industry are still primarily built in China.
That makes them especially vulnerable to the impact of these new tariffs.
Product categories with high exposure to anti-dumping tariffs:
- Boom lifts (telescopic & articulated) +30 meters
Only Haulotte produces these machines in the EU. Just a handful of manufacturers are based in the US.
- Slab scissor lifts
Chinese-built units dominate the market. EU production is limited to a few manufacturers (Haulotte, Snorkel, IMER …).
It remains uncertain to what extent production capacity will shift to the EU and emerging countries like India or Mexico.
- Big deck diesel scissor lifts, incl. +20 meters
With no EU manufacturers since Holland Lift closed down, this category is largely reliant on Chinese production.
Mathieu Naessens’ Insights:
“Expanding the EU manufacturing footprint could become a strategic priority. The question is, which manufacturers will take the lead?”
